Renfield review By Kimmie Lovegrove
I am a huge fan of supernatural films and tv shows especially when they are based on stories told by the community, such as the stories around Dracula. When I was a child I absolutely loved Van Helsing not for the fact that Hugh Jackman was ripped but the story was based in Romania which is where my mother is from. This peaked my interested to learn more so I fell in love with vampires on the big screen.
Renfield is a movie I’ve fallen in love with again. I wasn’t sure what to expect knowing Nicholas Cage playing Dracula. Cage played Dracula so well but Renfield isn’t about Dracula. It’s about Renfield, played by Nicholas Holt. I first seen Holt in Warm Bodies where he played a zombie. Another horror comedy movie.
Renfield features, in my opinion, some of the funniest comedic actors such as Ben Schwartz (Parks & Recreation), Adrian Martinez (I Feel Pretty) and Awkwafina (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings).
As the movie progressed I had no idea what to expect, the trailer gives a snippet into what it is about. All I knew was it was another Dracula movie but from the point of view of his assistant. Renfield after several centuries wants to break free from Dracula and comes across a support group for victims of narcissistic relationships after Dracula sends him about to bring back blood supply.
It was a different way of looking at Dracula and his familiar. I think the most important thing I took from it was that when your in any relationship you have the power to break free.
If you love a good horror comedy movie, I highly recommend Renfield. I will definitely be seeing it again!
